PUC Commissioner Gardner Congratulates New PUC Nominee

HARRISBURG – In response to Gov. Tom Corbett’s announcement that he will nominate Gladys M. Brown to the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (PUC), today Wayne E. Gardner has issued the following statement:

“I am extremely pleased to hear of Gladys Brown’s nomination.  I have had the opportunity to work closely with Ms. Brown in her capacity as Deputy Chief Counsel to the Senate Minority Leader, so I know first-hand that she will be an outstanding public utility commissioner.  I trust I have met the Commonwealth's expectations as one of its PUC Commissioners, as I have always taken my appointment and the people's interest very seriously.   I am sincerely grateful to former Gov. Edward Rendell for providing me the opportunity to serve.  I also am grateful to all of the Commissioners with whom I have honorably served.  Again I send my congratulations to Ms. Brown and wish her success during her confirmation process.” 

Commissioner Gardner was nominated to the PUC on June 19, 2008, by Gov. Edward G. Rendell to a five-year term on the PUC.  He was confirmed unanimously by the Pennsylvania Senate on June 30, 2008.  His term expired on April 1, 2013.

Since joining the PUC Commissioner Gardner has focused on reliability, price competitiveness, security of supply, and customer service for the consumers and utilities of the Commonwealth, as well as other policies as developed by the legislature and specifically Act 129. Commissioner Gardner serves on the Electricity Committee of the National Association of Regulatory Utilities Commissioners (NARUC). He also served on the board of directors for the Environmental Quality Board and the Mid-Atlantic Conference of Regulatory Utilities Commissioners (MACRUC).

Commissioner Gardner also is a member of the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (Natural) Gas Pipeline Safety Standards Committee.

The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission balances the needs of consumers and utilities; ensures safe and reliable utility service at reasonable rates; protects the public interest; educates consumers to make independent and informed utility choices; furthers economic development; and fosters new technologies and competitive markets in an environmentally sound manner.
