PUC Approves Default Service Plan for Pike County Light & Power Co.

HARRISBURG – The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (PUC) today approved the manner in which Pike County Light & Power Co. will secure default service supply for the company’s non-shopping customers for the period of June 1, 2014, through May 31, 2016.

The Commission voted 3-2 to approve the plan.  Under the plan the company will continue to acquire its default service supply on the New York Independent System Operator (NYISO) market and provide default service at spot market prices.  As a default service provider, Pike County Light & Power provides generation services to those customers who do not choose a competitive supplier.

Pike County’s default service rate is a fixed quarterly rate that is comprised of two components:  (1) the Market Price of Electric Supply based, which reflects the company’s projected procurement costs from NYISO, and (2) the Electric Supply Adjustment Charge, which reconciles actual default service costs with default service revenues, monthly, for the prior quarter. For any given quarter, however, Pike County’s historic component (Electric Supply Adjustment Charge) cannot exceed a charge or credit of $0.02 per kWh.

Pike County Light & Power Company provides electric distribution service to approximately 4,700 residential and commercial customers in Pike County.

The 1996 Electricity Generation Customer Choice and Competition Act provides that electric distribution companies, or a Commission-approved alternative supplier, will provide default electric generation service to customers who have not selected an alternative generation supplier.

The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission balances the needs of consumers and utilities; ensures safe and reliable utility service at reasonable rates; protects the public interest; educates consumers to make independent and informed utility choices; furthers economic development; and fosters new technologies and competitive markets in an environmentally sound manner.
