PUC to Investigate Rate Increase Request by Schuylkill Haven Water Department

Published on 4/23/2015

HARRISBURG – The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (PUC) today voted to investigate a request from the Borough of Schuylkill Haven Water Department (Borough) for a rate increase for its water service to customers outside of borough limits.

The Commission voted 5-0 to investigate the request for up to seven months. The request is suspended and will be assigned to the Office of Administrative Law Judge for a recommended decision. More information on the ratemaking process is available on the PUC’s website. The Commission must issue a final decision by Dec. 4, 2015.

The proposed rates would provide an increase in jurisdictional revenues of $283,079 (31.17 percent). Under the Borough’s proposal, the total bill for an average jurisdictional residential water customer using approximately 3,000 gallons of water per month would increase from $25.86 to $33.20 (28.4 percent). The total bill for a typical 2” meter commercial customer using 34,000 gallons of water per month would increase from $238.77 to $317.00 (32.7 percent).

The Borough provides water service to 958 residential customers and 91 commercial customers outside of borough limits.

The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission balances the needs of consumers and utilities; ensures safe and reliable utility service at reasonable rates; protects the public interest; educates consumers to make independent and informed utility choices; furthers economic development; and fosters new technologies and competitive markets in an environmentally sound manner.
