PUC to Investigate PECO Energy Company’s Rate Increase Request

HARRISBURG – The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (PUC) today voted to investigate a distribution rate increase request for PECO Energy Company (PECO).

The Commission voted 5-0 to investigate the request to increase the company’s annual electric distribution rates by $190 million (15.6 percent). The Commission investigation will determine what, if any, of the requested increases are justified.

In a joint statement, Chairman Robert F. Powelson and Commissioner Gladys M. Brown directed questions to the parties related to PECO’s proposal to replace the Auxiliary Service Rider in its existing tariff with a new Capacity Reservation Rider and expressed a desire to foster an on-the-record discussion regarding that proposal.

Under the rate increase request, the monthly electric bill for an average residential customer using 700 kilowatt-hours per month would increase by $6.55, from $110.18 to $116.73 (5.9 percent). PECO provides electric service to approximately 1.6 million customers within Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery, Philadelphia and York Counties.

The request is suspended for up to seven months and will be assigned to the Office of Administrative Law Judge for public hearings and a recommended decision or settlement. A final decision must be made by Dec. 26, 2015. More information on the ratemaking process is available on the Commission’s website.
