HARRISBURG – The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (PUC) today voted to approve a lower rate increase than what was originally requested by Appalachian Utilities Inc. (Clinton County).

The Commission voted 5-0 to approve a rate increase of $212,000 (39.3 percent) for the company.  The company had originally requested an increase in annual revenues of $252,721 (46.3 percent). The settlement was reached among the PUC’s independent Bureau of Investigation and Enforcement, Appalachian Utilities, the state’s Office of Consumer Advocate and the state’s Office of Small Business Advocate.

Under the terms of the settlement, the average bi-monthly water bill of a residential customer using 6,000 gallons of water will increase from $48.34 to $68.17. The company provides water service to 1,950 customers in portions of the Borough of Avis, Pine Creek and Dunnstable townships, Clinton County. The company’s last rate increase before the PUC was in 1996.

The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission balances the needs of consumers and utilities; ensures safe and reliable utility service at reasonable rates; protects the public interest; educates consumers to make independent and informed utility choices; furthers economic development; and fosters new technologies and competitive markets in an environmentally sound manner.
