PUC Approves Acquisition of Small Pike County Wastewater System Following Lengthy Investigation of Operational & Service Issues

Published on 6/13/2019

HARRISBURG – The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (PUC) today granted final approval for the acquisition of the Delaware Sewer Company (DSC), which provides wastewater service to 39 homes in the Wild Acres Development, located in Delaware Township, Pike County.

The Commission voted 5-0 today to approve the sale of DSC assets to PAWC, along with PAWC’s improvement plan for the system, under a settlement agreement reached by the parties – following the thorough review of comments that were received after the Commission’s tentative approval on April 29, 2019.

The acquisition of DSC assets by Pennsylvania American Water Company – Wastewater Operations (PAWC), follows a lengthy investigation under Section 529 of the Public Utility Code, which allows the PUC to order a capable public utility to acquire a troubled small water or sewer utility that is unable to furnish or maintain adequate, efficient, safe and reasonable service.

Today’s Order establishes a five-day period for parties to withdraw from the settlement. If no parties withdraw, the Commission’s order will become final without any further action.

The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission balances the needs of consumers and utilities; ensures safe and reliable utility service at reasonable rates; protects the public interest; educates consumers to make independent and informed utility choices; furthers economic development; and fosters new technologies and competitive markets in an environmentally sound manner.
