PUC Grants Emergency Authority to Penn Central Taxi and Keystone Cab to Expand Taxi Service

HARRISBURG - The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (PUC) today granted emergency authority to two taxi companies to offer service in York County to fill the transportation needs of county residents. Penn Central Taxi of Harrisburg may now offer taxi service in York County, and Keystone Cab Services of Harrisburg can offer service in Adams, Perry and York counties. In addition, Capital City Cab also offers service in York County. All three companies informed the PUC this week that they are expanding service in Harrisburg.

Adams, Perry and York counties have been largely without taxi service since Yellow Cab lost PUC authority to serve Harrisburg and nearby areas due to its inability to provide the Commission with proof of insurance.

Keystone Cab Service and Penn Central Taxi have been granted emergency authority by the PUC to extend their operations to offer service in York County through emergency orders signed today by Chairman Glen R. Thomas. Both companies have valid proof of insurance on file with the Commission.

"This is a significant step in filling the public need created by Yellow Cab's exit from the market," said Tom Charles, PUC Communications Manager. "With cab companies stepping forward to expand their service, the PUC is making sure that area residents have access to the service that helps them continue their daily lives without interruption. Keystone Cab and Penn Central have asked to expand their service into York County. We ask their potential customers to be patient as these companies begin their service.

"In the Harrisburg area, there’s also good news. Capital City Cab, Penn Central and Keystone Cab have each expressed plans to expand their Harrisburg-area fleets by hiring new drivers and increasing the number of cabs."

Capital City Cab of Steelton is expanding its operations in York, and expects to have a York phone number soon. The company also offers taxi service in Dauphin, Perry and Cumberland counties. Capital City Cab can be reached at (717) 939-6363 in the Harrisburg area.

Keystone Cab Service of Harrisburg currently offers service in Dauphin County. The public should contact Keystone to see when service will be available in Adams, Perry and York counties. Keystone can be reached at (717) 234-4400 in Harrisburg.

Penn Central Taxi of Harrisburg currently offers service in Dauphin and Cumberland counties. Penn Central plans to begin service in York County next week. Penn Central can be reached at (717) 909-9944.

The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission ensures safe, reliable and reasonably priced electric, natural gas, water, telephone and transportation service for Pennsylvania consumers, by regulating public utilities and by serving as responsible stewards of competition.
