PUC to Investigate Verizon PA’s Billing for Directory Assistance Calls

HARRISBURG – The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (PUC) today initiated an investigation into Verizon Pennsylvania Inc.’s billing for directory assistance calls.

“The purpose of the investigation is to determine whether, based on staff’s investigation results, any changes in procedures or other remedial measures are warranted,” said Commission Vice Chairman Tyrone J. Christy in a motion.

The Commission voted 5-0 to investigate the billing of directory assistance calls to ensure the billing conforms with the Public Utility Code and Commission regulations. The investigation is to be completed in six months.

The investigation was initiated in response to an increase in informal complaints to the Commission about the billing of directory assistance calls. About 175 informal complaints have been filed regarding directory assistance in the last 15 months.

The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission balances the needs of consumers and utilities to ensure safe and reliable utility service at reasonable rates; protect the public interest; educate consumers to make independent and informed utility choices; further economic development; and foster new technologies and competitive markets in an environmentally sound manner.
