Current Area Codes

There is currently only one area code in Central Pennsylvania: 717.

In April 1999, the 717 area code split into two regions. The southern region kept the 717 area code and the northern section was given the new 570 area code.

Thousands-Block Pooling

The 717 area code region began the pooling on March 14, 2002. The FCC permitted 717 to be a mandatory pool.

With pooling, the present area codes will be used more efficiently while ultimately delaying the need to add new area codes in the future. The new projected exhaust date for the 717 area code is the forth quarter of 2016.
