582/814 Proposed Exchanges
The proposed 582/814 exchanges after the split occurs.

Area code relief began in the 814 (NPA) area code by the filing of a petition on behalf of the telecommunications industry by NANPA (North American Numbering Plan Administrator). The industry considered four relief options.

In December 2010, the Commission ordered (order) a split of the 814 area code (county map or rate center map). Neustar assigned 582 to the Northwestern Area B of the split, and Area A would retain the 814 area code. Petitions of reconsideration were filed with the Commission on Jan. 3, 2011, to reconsider the split. On Jan. 13, 2011, the Commission granted in part the petitions of reconsideration in an order as well as a joint motion, which reopened the case for technical conferences and public hearings.  These meetings will be scheduled in various cities within the 814 area code.

The third party area code relief planner, Neustar, announced that the new projected exhaust date for the 814 area code is the first quarter of 2016, not the first quarter of 2015.

Public Input Hearings

Technical conferences and public input hearings were held during the spring and summer months in various locations throughout the 814 area code territory.

For more information see the 814 Public Input Hearing press release. Additional technical conferences and public input hearings will be scheduled in other affected geographic locations in the near future

Thousands-Block Pooling

Mandatory thousands-block pooling began in June 2010. The industry, NANPA and the PUC monitor the area code to determine if or when relief will be needed.

With pooling, the present area code will be used more efficiently while ultimately delaying the need to add new area codes in the future.

For more information on pooling, please see Area Code Conservation.
