Accident Reporting

Reportable Accidents

A reportable accident is one involving one or more of the following:

• Death of a person.
• Personal injuries which require medical attention.
• Damage to any vehicle involved to the extent that it cannot be driven under its own power in its customary manner without further damage or hazard to the vehicle, other traffic elements, or the roadway, and therefore requires towing.

Passenger and Household Goods Carriers

Within 30 days after a reportable accident occurs, a detailed report will be mailed to:

In the event of a fatality, an immediate report shall be made by telephone to the Motor Carrier Enforcement Section at 717-433-7870​. The written report is also required.

A copy of an accident report prepared by the police or an insurance company will be accepted in lieu of a written accident report.

Property and Charter Bus Carriers (Ref. 49 CFR Part 390)

Property and Charter Bus carriers are not required to submit accident reports to the Commission. However, these carriers must maintain an accident register containing the information described in 49 CFR 390.15(b)(adopted by the Commission at 52 Pa. Code §37.204). The accident information must be maintained for a period of one year after an accident occurs.

Property and Charter Bus carriers shall make all records and information pertaining to an accident available to an authorized representative (PUC enforcement officer) of the Commission upon request or as part of any inquiry within such time as the request or inquiry may specify.
