PUC Approves Lower Rate Than Requested for Duquesne Light

HARRISBURG – The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (PUC) today to approve a partial settlement for a lower rate increase than originally requested by Duquesne Light Co.

The Commission voted 5-0 to approve partial settlement, which was agreed to by the all of the formal parties in the case with the exception of NRG. One issue concerning an existing tariff provision that deals with rates for purchasing electricity from customer-owned renewable resource generating facilities (Rider No. 18) is being severed to allow for further review.

According to the settlement, the company will increase rates by $48 million (11 percent). The company’s original proposal asked for a $76.3 million increase (17.6 percent).

Under the settlement, the average total monthly bill for customers using 600 kWh would increase by $5.10 (6.5 percent) from $78.42 to $83.52 per month. Under the company’s original proposal, the average total monthly bill for customers using 600 kWh would have increased by $8.23 (10.58 percent) from $77.77 to $86 per month.

More information on the ratemaking process is available on the Commission’s website.
